Big shock: Sunday alcohol sales bill dies in the Senate

It's been a fight for the last three legislative sessions here in the good of state of Georgia -- the battle for booze sales on Sunday.

Only two other states -- Connecticut and Indiana -- have a similar law banning all store sales of alcohol on Sundays. Even Alabama, a notoriously conservative state, allows Sabbath day sales, though only after noon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday that the bill that'd open up sales outside of restaurants and festivals has died in the Senate Regulated Industries Committee.

Senator Seth Harp (R-Midland) -- the sponsor of the bill -- pulled the legislation after it failed to even make it out of committee which, incidentally, is made up of a few folks vying for higher statewide political offices in 2010, including Regulated Industries chairman David Shafer (R-Duluth), who is running for lieutenant governor.

But Sunday drinkers, don't despair quite yet: a similar bill is making its way through the House of Representatives, though the chance of it coming out alive is slim.
