Playing to packed clubs almost every appearance, Atlanta's Selmanaires have become a local favorite since their inception six years ago. Their albums are consistent best sellers at local outlets, and the band recently signed on as both a tour mate and a backing band for Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox’s project Atlas Sound, a tour that’s headlined by Broadcast.
Always known for their more psychedelic garage rock style, the band recently switched sounds for something a bit more electronic, utilizing pre-programmed sounds to flesh out a live mix of vocals, keys, bass and, often, drums. This new sound has many evident influences, though one of the most surprising is tropicalia, something that is likely emphasized in their new album, which will feature a track with Leticia Arioli, a Brazilian-born singer of the now-defunct Batata Doce.
From their new album, the song "Princess Illusionist Frankenstein."
The three founding members – Tommy Chung, Jason Harris and Herb Harris – are now joined by percussionist Mario Schambon. The band spent the summer at New Street Studio recording the aforementioned third full-length album, which is slated for release in short time.
We interrupted a recent mixing session to ask a few questions.
